Our Printing Technology

IndividualStudio.com does their best to maintain the fidelity of your creative intent through the complex process of reproduction in print. While printing 200 LPI (lines per inch) may be satisfactory… and even considered “art book quality”, there is a better and higher quality method for producing better work and we have gone one huge step further with the adoption of stochastic printing equipment that brings PHOTOGRAPHIC quality to your printed pieces! Stochastic printing eliminates halftone screen angles, rosettes and screening moire‰ while preserving the desirable details in your artwork. Industry experts refer to the new process as “Frequency Modulated Screen” or simply, “FM Screen”. The process employs 500 LPI technology… that’s 2.5x times better than an art book!!!

FM Screen

What is FM Screen?

FM Screening is a unique and accurate process that uses a 20 micron dot technology in a random arrangement with no set frequency or angle. Dark tones are rendered with higher frequency dots and light tones with fewer dots. Random distributions of dots eliminates screening moire‰, subject moire‰ and AM rosettes. The microdot structure leads to photographic quality, greater tonal stability on press, a larger color gamut and reduced ink usage compared to AM or XM screens.

…printers have opted for and used AM (or, Amplitude Modulated) Screening, which is a halftone screen arranged on a grid. Larger dots render dark tone values while smaller dots are used for lighter values. When viewed from a distance, these dots create the illusion of continuous tone reproduction. Even most common day screen rulings range up to only 200 LPI.

The Standard

FM Screen is the standard at IndividualStudio.com. It gives us the ability to produce high quality images that exhibit fine detail without visible dots, rosettes, screening moire‰, gray level limitations or abrupt jumps in color tone. Typical printers use a screen frequency of 175-200 lines per inch. IndividualStudio.coms’ FM Screen technology resolves texts and images to 20 microns, equivalent to 500 lines per inch!

FM Screen improves color and halftone stability on press, making it the perfect complement to consistent high quality sheet-fed printing. Increased stability means more vibrant, more predictable color. FM Screen brings tonal and color stability to the press room by reducing variations in dot gain caused by changes in solid ink density, wet trap and color contamination from paper. Unique halftone patterns are used in each separation to minimize dot-on-dot printing. The on press stability of FM Screen makes it particularly effective for replacing custom colors with process screen builds. When imaging, FM Screening delivers unmatched quality and is a practical tool for IndividualStudio.com customers. Want to know more? Contact us!
